To draw a conclusion on our last Unit of Inquiry, Grade 3 decided a trip to the Qatar Scientific Club was in order so we set off on our lovely buses.
Here we were met by Illona and her welcoming team for a day full of experimenting and discovery.
You can see from the album below there was no shortage of intrigue as we revised chemical and physical reactions, created density towers and changed states of matter.
We got to observe ( from a safe distance 🙂 ) what happens when hot water is cooled by liquid nitrogen, can you guess what happened?

Something a bit like this …

Check out our young scientists getting hands on with Matter!

By the way, we also totally bossed it during our recent Sports Day organised by our fantastic PE Team here at SEK!

Huge congrats to everyone for taking part and trying their very best on the day. It was great to see hard work and sweat everywhere. One thing which we really enjoyed seeing was people winning and losing well, remembering it’s all just a bit of fun at the end of the day.
Thanks again PE and to all who helped make it a brilliant day for everyone.
Parents, if you took any photos please do feel free to share with us and we can add them to the blog as sometimes we’re not able to take as many photos as we would like.

WHAT A DAY!

Grade 3 took to Doha like a duck to water, exploring and inquiring around our wonderful city, finding out many different pieces of interesting information all the while having so much fun with our friends!

Thanks to Doha Bus for providing their cool open top bus which proved a great way to observe our surroundings.

Culture was the order of the day and we were spoiled for choice in Katara and Souq Waqif. Students were balancing the adventure with hard work as their completed their task booklets.

Even with the heat, everyone had a blast and showed super enthusiasm throughout the day. Big shout out to our parent helpers who were invaluable as always.

Leave your comments below, tell us what you learnt, what you enjoyed or what you would like to know more about.
Hope you all had as much fun as us, looking forward to planning our next trip!! 🙂

Character Day!

We dedicated this week to celebrating our good old friends: BOOKS! Book Week at SEK was full of exciting activities, including writing and illustrating our own class story, listening to “mystery readers” and the best part was spending a day dressed up as a book character. Students made a huge effort at costumes, take a look at them below!

Having a ball with Sphero!

On Wednesday this week in SEK, Technology teamed up with its’ good friend Maths to join and collaborate with their extended cousins Arts and Expression to create exciting and interesting activities for Grade 3.

5106931

Sphero is the world’s most awesome robot ball that you control from your smartphone or tablet. Grade 3 students were introduced to the advanced yet easy to use ways of the Sphero and everyone had turns playing around with the technology and getting comfortable with the controls. We completed basic tasks and had a brief look at the coding capabilities of this cool little ball.

Our idea is to use Sphero more and more over the coming weeks, to develop our understanding of coding and our ability. We will be making shapes, using colour to express emotions and photographing movement to create art pieces.

Just like our world, Sphero provides endless possibilities and we are very excited to explore them together and see what we can achieve.

Stay tuned!

Getting Our Code On

Big thanks to Mr. Fran for taking some time out to show us some of the new features of  code.org. Everyone really enjoyed themselves  working with Moana and are looking forward to getting to do more and more coding!

Remember, you can always do more coding at home and tell us about it in school 🙂

Follow the link to find the page you worked from last week.

“A tree falls the way it leans. Be careful which way you lean.” – The Lorax

Take a bow everyone for a great start to our new unit which we kicked off by exploring the wacky world of The Lorax.

Both classes did tremendous work unpacking our latest central idea;

“Balance ensures organism survival within an ecosystem.”

We worked in groups in order to sort a random selection of organisms to make connections between them and discuss why we felt they belonged alongside each other. We are very happy with the outcome and wanted you to see what the groups produced.

Really looking forward to delving into the unit of inquiry together and discovering connections we never knew we had before!
